RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
