"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have openly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals frequently show them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record came out of a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will forever be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
