Unconquerable Not Anymore: Why The Indian Red-Ball Cricket Legacy Is in Tatters

The Indian cricket team's shocking 0-2 defeat to South Africa in the recently concluded Test series has sent shockwaves through the squad.

In the final match, the visiting team inflicted upon India their heaviest loss in Test cricket, contrary to predictions. It marked the Proteas' maiden series victory in India in 25 years and the host nation's another home failure in just a year after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The winning rhythm gained during the last several months has all but vanished and the careers of several players - including team coach Gautam Gambhir - are now uncertain.

A Promising Start Fades Quickly

The emerging side's strong showing in the UK this summer, under a fresh leadership, indicated a smooth transition after the almost concurrent exits of key players R Ashwin, Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

An easy 2-0 victory over West Indies at the beginning of the domestic season boosted that belief, until the Proteas came and inflicted a devastating defeat.

India were a bit unlucky that leader Shubman Gill was injured very early in the opening Test and did not participate again in the series. But that neither explains nor absolves the squad of the highly disappointing display in the two games against the opposition.

Several established players were damaged, and a few members hoping for extended tenures in Tests were exposed as still inadequate - in skill or mindset - for the Test cricket.

Worrying Trend

This represented the second series sweep on home soil experienced by the Indian team in just a year. Last year, underestimated New Zealand had achieved a staggering 3-0 victory which essentially denied India a place in the Test championship finale.

The latest loss to the Proteas threatens to derail India's chances of qualifying for the showpiece of this edition as well.

From number three in the WTC rankings ahead of the matches, the side have dropped to the fifth spot. Although nine additional matches are yet to be played, a majority are against the Aussies. Usually, playing at home would be a huge advantage - even against the mighty Aussies. However the debacles against the Kiwis and the Proteas offer no room for that confidence.

Roots of the Decline

India's vulnerability in Test cricket has been clearly revealed. Nevertheless, why India have struggled so much in Test matches at home in recent times is continues to confuse.

In the 21st century, India were regarded as impregnable in red-ball cricket in home conditions. Under sweltering weather and on surfaces that favored spin bowling and aided their squad, the hosts dominated all comers. A rare failure, like in the 2012-13 season against the English, was viewed as an exception.

Today, India appear to be vulnerable on home turf.

Versus New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa this year, India were hoisted by their own petard. The tracks they developed to suit their strengths backfired spectacularly, as opponents exploited them better, outplaying India's batsmen and bowlers when it mattered most.

What Happened?

Certain analysts propose that India is struggling in home conditions because local wickets have been modified from turners to fast tracks to prepare players to do well in foreign conditions.

A few mention that the Indian Premier League (IPL), in which numerous foreign cricketers play, has removed the unfamiliarity and challenge subcontinental pitches would pose to them before.

Even though there is validity in each argument, it fails to account for why the team's showings at home have witnessed such a sharp fall.

Multiple Failings

The majority of ex-cricketers diagnose a complex, multi-headed problem, not only one or two factors.

Critics and players have identified multiple deficiencies following the team's embarrassing defeat to the Proteas: not respecting the foe, lack of preparation, questionable picks, overconfidence, frequent changes of the team lineup, and emphasizing white-ball over Test cricket.

This was evident in the showings of the squad.

Cricketers like Rishabh Pant and Jaiswal, of whom high hopes were held, suffered for their carelessness, while Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel - who were looking to cement their spot in the side - were found wanting in skill and mindset, suffering the consequences for their casual attitude.

Only a handful - Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Siraj and Washington Sundar - did justice to their skill and fame - but not well enough to secure victories.

Leadership Under Fire

The analysis targeted the entire setup - team selectors and coaching staff were also questioned, driven by distraught fans and outspoken ex-cricketers. Under focus of the scrutiny was head coach Gautam Gambhir.
